Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics

Plastic surgery is a medical specialty that focuses on restoring, enhancing or correcting the way various body parts appear or perform. The field can be divided into reconstructive surgery and aesthetics (also referred to as cosmetic surgery). Some plastic surgeons specialize in treating burns or in craniofacial surgery, hand surgery or micro-surgery.

Spiral scanners are advanced computer tomography (CT) scanners that use a spiral movement to yield a high resolution scan that produces 3D images of areas within the body.

New Developments in OB/GYN Probes

Sonograms are frequently used in obstetrics and gynecology practices to visualize an embryo or fetus in utero, or to visualize a woman’s reproductive organs. Obstetric sonograms have traditionally been done by placing a transducer on the abdomen of the pregnant woman. More recently, however, advanced highly sensitive ultrasound probes have been developed that are placed in the woman’s vagina, resulting in transvaginal scans that provide pictures that are clearer, particularly in the early months of pregnancy and in obese women. In addition, a full bladder is not needed to obtain high-quality images, as for abdominal probes, resulting in greater comfort for the patient.

Pediatrics and Neonatal Pediatrics

Pediatrics is the specialized field of medicine that deals with maintaining and restoring the health of babies, children and teens. Pediatricians focus primarily on well-child care and preventative measures, such as immunizations and annual check-ups. In addition, a large part of pediatrics practices involve treating common childhood illnesses, such as bacterial and viral infections, as well as injuries and chronic disorders.

PET and PET/CT

Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging technology creates 3D images of functional processes in patients’ bodies. The imaging is facilitated by positron-emitting radionuclide or tracers which are injected into the patient before they undergo the scan. The tracers combine with biologically active molecules such as glucose to indicate areas of high metabolic activity.
